High Street

Seaside and shopping – what a great combination! Whitstable is famous for its oysters, actors, artists and working harbour. Tankerton is just along the road (and beach!) and has its own character, seafront and charm.

Harbour Street

These close coastal neighbours have fantastic independent shops and businesses. They have award-winning restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars too. And they welcome visitors and residents alike.

Shopping here is a bit like a treasure hunt, for visitors and residents alike. On a walk down Whitstable’s Oxford Street into the High Street, through Harbour Street to the harbour itself, you’ll find everything from fine art and fashion, fruit and veg, colanders and coffee to sewing-machines and seafood.

Tankerton is smaller and more compact; Tankerton Road’s stores offer antiques and collectables, lighting, blinds and kitchens, mid-century and upcycled furniture, greetings cards, baked goods, hand-crafted jewellery, craft beers, craft supplies and more…

Taking time for a drink or meal also makes seaside shopping special. See our listings page for fabulous eateries and events for fun things to do and see. And if you come by car, discover the pleasures of park and stride, with a walk through the town or along the beach from a parking spot away from the centre. It keeps the town free of congestion, plus you’ll enjoy lovely sea air, healthy exercise and a totally different view of Whitstable and Tankerton!

Don’t forget – the money you spend with independent businesses benefits the local economy and the whole community. It’s good to #shopbythesea!
